The impact of a teacher.
Teachers have a very significant lifelong impact on all of their students.
This impact involves not only the teaching of particular academic skills, but as importantly, the fostering of student self-esteem. Reinforcing self-esteem in the classroom is associated with increased motivation and learning.
We believe that when we are young we are in search for role models. Adults we can look up to who aren’t our parents. The closest thing children and teenagers have for that is their teachers. Teachers give you a new frame of reference, beside the adults in your family and friends your parents have. Teachers are different and new kinds of adults they see and listen to every day.
This is why it is important that the relationship between a teacher and a student is a positive one. If the classroom environment isn’t a safe place, or when a teacher (without thinking) says something hurtful to the student, when a teacher does not have the tools to guide students with mental/physical problems, or even when a teacher abuses their power over the student (sexual abuse) are all examples that can really impact the life of the student.
We want to explore the impact of a teacher on the student.
We feel it is important to do so, as we are future teachers, to protect ourselves not to make the same mistakes and become better teachers in the future.

As young aspiring teachers we see the power we hold as a teacher. We see danger in being a terrible teacher and the victory of a great teacher. The impact you can have, can stick with one throughout their whole life. We each have been wronged, one could even call it an act of violence, by our teachers in the past. Those moments might have been nonintentional, a fleeting moment or could even been a moment where a teacher tried to make a positive impact on us. However, one thing we know for sure: teaching is a profession where you mustn't underestimate your own power.

The most important tool we used while working online is Teams. There is where we met up to share our thoughts and have discussions. Working on our project, we also used Hotglue to organize and Adobe programs to design.

After reflecting on our own experiences, we started collecting stories of others around us. We asked them: ‘What impact has a teacher made on you?’. We asked for a drawing alongside. While taking the time of making the drawings beforehand, really made the memories come alive. By listening, we saw some connections with our own experiences, but also found it very special to see what one remembers about their school experience.

The goal is to show current teachers and teachers of the future, including us, what the impact can be on a pupil. We also give the stories back to the people we interviewed, as a thank you. Therefore, we want to make a book where the stories are bundled. To conclude, we hope that with making this we won’t repeat any of the acts of violence that we have been told about. Awareness is the first step to make a change.
